Definition
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic which is included in the penicillin group. This drug works against bacteria in the body.
Amoxicillin is used to treat many types of different infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections of bacteria E. coli or salmonella. Amoxicillin is also sometimes used together with another antibiotic called clarithromycin (Biaxin) to treat stomach infections due to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This combination is sometimes used in conjunction with lowering stomach acid called lansoprazole (prevacid).
